Overview

Nestled in the rugged embrace of the Western Cape mountains and built upon the ruins of an old farm building that burnt down, this artist's retreat is a pure expression of simplicity and permanence. Designed as an "object in a field," its bold concrete planes anchor it to the landscape, while vertical timber cladding weathers naturally, allowing the structure to evolve harmoniously with its surroundings. Due to the prevalence of veld fires in the region, Pemba conducted a series of material studies around the various types of timber that could be used. The results lead to an external cladding that used flame-retardant oils that didn't compromise the aesthetics of the hardwood cladding but add a layer of protection.

The architecture is refined yet restrained, emphasizing the client's character and intent through clean lines, precise detailing, and a connection to the environment. Inside, the living spaces are open, understated, and functional, promoting a lifestyle of simplicity and reflection. Large openings frame curated views of the vast farm and mountains beyond, dissolving the boundaries between interior and exterior.
